Tate & Lyle made our dreams come true when they opened the doors of the world’s first-ever cake hotel. Yes, that’s right. A hotel made from actual cake! Open for one night only (after all, stale frosting is a big no-no), we were given an exclusive peek into all eight delicious rooms. Hansel and Gretel, eat your heart out.
With macaroon banisters, vanilla sponge cushions, meringue rugs and popcorn-filled baths, it took a team of 14 cake-makers more than 2,000 hours to bake and 900 hours to decorate the hotel. There were even windowsills made entirely of fudge and edible books on the bedside table – talk about sweet dreams!
Each room was inspired by different regions around the world, in honour of Tate & Lyle’s new Taste Experience range of golden and brown cane sugars. In the British-themed Golden Syrup Sugar living room, we loved the sweet shortbread and tower of donuts; in the Mediterranean-style bedroom, 10-metres of edible pearlescent bunting caught our eye! Our favourite, though, was the Barbados library, filled with huge edible shells and beautiful hand-painted cookies.
We left on a sugar high, massive smiles on our faces, inspired to get more creative with our baking at home. We might not be making cake cushions anytime soon, but we can dream, right?!
